What’s the point of closing borders if anyway infections keep growing?

Beatrice Tozzi

Covid 19 generated several problems, especially among workers. One of the sectors that was most affected from the pandemic was tourism, in addition to international flights. The closure of flights didn’t only leave on the ground travelers, but also whole airlines and, above all, tourist operators. For example, after two years of pandemic, Japan has only recently reopened its borders, and just for certain categories, like foreign students or business travelers[1].

Another case: after 704 days of international-connection-lockdown, Australia reopened its space only at the end of February, and for all the categories of travelers[2].

Then there is the situation of India: the Government has in fact announced that on the 28th of March international flights are going to be totally working[3]. This news comes after two years in which India finds itself without international traffic, and above all, economic growth. The question to be asked is: what’s the point of closing borders if anyway infections keep growing? It is evident that only economic has been stopped, not the number of deaths.

In the total indifference of the Indian Government, for a worker is just not possible to change its job overnight, especially in a moment that “unnecessary” activities are constantly stopped due the increase of Covid 19 cases.

We talked with a tourism company owner, Abshiek Sharma, to understand how his life and his work have changed because of the pandemic and, as result, the absence of international flights and travelers. Before the start of the pandemic Abshiek job consisted in booking air ticket for his clients, especially for Europe and North America. Of course his business got affected by Covid, because air traffic closed and for him “everything start collapsing”. Airline company refuse to refund the tickets to their clients, unloading all the responsibilities of a possible refund to Abshiek and his company, “a really unkind situation” for them.

Also, the Government in that phase was not supporting at all this business, providing any type of help. According to him, stopping international flights isn’t clearly the solution in the battle of keeping low the case of Covid.

Unfortunately, also other jobs related to tourism are suffering. For example, lack of international flight has totally stopped the NGO’s sector, a field that entirely depends on international travel and on people’s circulation.

In the future we should take more preventive measure to bring activities back at all the sectors that have suffered the most, because no industries should be penalized or left behind the others. While the pharmaceutical industry continues to grow, tourist agencies are without any work and international volunteer programs find also themselves without any interns. A situation that needs to be rethought at all.
